Just as there are many types of towel rails, there are also just as many ways of installing them.
Although the quick guide below details only one method, the basics will apply to any situation.
In this example the rail is being attached to a plastered masonry wall, so you may also like to read A Quick Guide to Using Wall Plugs and A Quick Guide to Using a Masonry Drill Bit.
While the positioning of the towel rail is entirely up to you, you may like to take into consideration easy access from the shower, bathtub or vanity (but not where the towels may get wet from splashing), and where the rail will not be used as a handle to help get out of the bath or shower.
The ideal height is 1200 to 1700mm, depending on the ceiling and any obstructions.
- Electric drill and masonry drill bit.
- Spirit level.
- Depending on the screws, a flathead or Philips screwdriver.
- Measuring tape.
- Pencil.
Materials
- Although the towel rail came with screws and wall plugs supplied I used larger gauge screws for my own piece of mind.
- Towel rail.

Step 1 – Decide where you want to locate the towel rail and lightly mark the position using the pencil. In this example the rail came with two mounting brackets which were removed from the rail by loosening the set screws.

Step 2 – Place a mounting bracket against your original pencil lines and mark the spot where you want to drill the holes. Measure the distance to the other bracket and also mark the hole locations. Use the spirit level to ensure you are level.

Step 3 – Drill the holes, insert the wall plugs and affix the mounting brackets to the wall with the screws.

Step 3 – Place the towel rail over the mounting brackets and tighten the set screws. Job done.

Other
The above method can also be used to install the rail on ceramic tiles. You may wish to place masking tape on the tiles to mark the hole locations with the pencil. When drilling into tiles apply pressure slowly.
In the case of plasterboard you will need to use toggle bolts instead of screws.
