A Quick Guide to Attaching Picture Wire

If whatever you are hanging does not already have picture wire attached, don’t worry, it is a very easy job you can do yourself.

I used screw eyes as the fasteners due to having some already in my toolbox, however as there are a number of different types of fasteners available; you may wish to discuss with your local hardware representative what is the best type to use for your situation.

When you have finished attaching the wire, you may also like to see A Guide to Hanging a Painting on the Wall.

Tools

  • Electric drill and drill bit.
  • Measuring tape.
  • Pliers.
  • Pencil.

Materials

  • Screw eyes or other appropriate fastener.
  • Picture wire.

Step 1 – The fasteners should always go about 1/3 of the way down from the top edge of the painting, so after measuring approximately 1/3, make a mark on both sides of the painting where you want to drill the holes.  Note:  Before drilling you may wish to turn the painting over and double check it is the right way up.

Step 2 – Select a drill bit smaller than the screw eye and drill the holes.

Step 3 – Insert the screw eyes by hand or use your pliers.

Step 3 – Loop the picture wire through the screw eye a couple of times and wind the excess around the length of the wire.  Pull the wire tight to the other screw eye, cut to size (making sure you have enough excess to wind around) and tie it off as before. Job done.
